"I believe that the great American hamburger is a thing of beauty, its simple charms noble, pristine. The basic recipe--ground beef, salt, and pepper, formed into a patty, grilled or seared on a griddle, then nestled between two halves of a bun, usually but not necessarily accompanied by lettuce, a tomato slice, and some ketchup--is, to my mind, unimprovable by man or God. A good burger can be made more complicated, even more interesting by the addition of other ingredients--like good cheese or bacon.....relish perhaps, but it will never be made better." - Anthony Bourdain, from the chapter entitled 'Meat', in his book Medium Raw.

Grideli's (South Ogden, UT)

A tray of burgers at Grideli's. And ooh, they even have S.'s favorite: sweet potato fries!

S. got the bleu cheese burger, which is one of her favorites. And this one looked very good when it was served.

But after a few minutes, it started to fall apart. Look how messy S.'s hands out - she hates to get her hands dirty! Some people make their bleu cheese burgers with real, crumbled bleu cheese; others make it by smothering the burger in bleu cheese dressing. Grideli's goes with the second option.

While it was a fine-tasting burger, we are all of the opinion that we prefer bleu cheese crumbles to bleu cheese dressing, for burgers anyway.

Hug Hes (Ogden, UT)

Hug Hes is one of our favorte locally owned restaurants in Ogden. S. especially loves their Cobb Salad, but this isn't a salad blog, so on to the burgers!

V. got the Ultimate Burger.

S. got the halibut burger ($8.49). That's OK for this burger blog, isn't it? We never said it had to be beef burger.

And even though this last picture isn't of a burger, it's one of Hug Hes' signatures: a loaf of beer bread with a raspberry yogurt spread. So delicious.

Nothing too fancy, but they do have fry sauce!

Cheyenne Mountain Resort (Colorado Springs, CO)

The Cheyenne Mountain Resort served a pretty good burger for just being a lobby bar. We both got the bleu cheese burger. V had waffle fries and S had sweet potato fries.

Look at those baby condiments in the background! A true favorite of S.

The Broadmoor Hotel (Colorado Springs, CO)

The Broadmoor is a legendary hotel. And the food was excellent and easily lived up to the reputation of the hotel. I loved the fancy presentation of the condiments. Presentation is everything.
