"I believe that the great American hamburger is a thing of beauty, its simple charms noble, pristine. The basic recipe--ground beef, salt, and pepper, formed into a patty, grilled or seared on a griddle, then nestled between two halves of a bun, usually but not necessarily accompanied by lettuce, a tomato slice, and some ketchup--is, to my mind, unimprovable by man or God. A good burger can be made more complicated, even more interesting by the addition of other ingredients--like good cheese or bacon.....relish perhaps, but it will never be made better." - Anthony Bourdain, from the chapter entitled 'Meat', in his book Medium Raw.

Diablo Burger (Flagstaff, AZ)

S. is very jealous that she missed out on this awesome presentation! V. said not only does it look cool, it was pretty tasty, too. Who would have thought to brand the bun?

Rickenbacker's Bistro (Ogden, UT)

Rickenbacker's is one of my favorite Ogden-area restaurants. They have gourmet food, but it's not a stuffy atmosphere. Their burger did not disappoint. S. had the halibut and V. had the fish and chips so we get to hear about the burger from a guest blogger today. B., take it away!

Five Guys Burgers and Fries (Pocatello, ID)

At Five Guys, you can custom-build your burger from their list of ingredients.

V. chose to get jalapenos on his burger.

S. chose tomatoes, pickles, and A-1.

Up close shot of the S. burger.

At Five Guys, they stack the potatoes and other ingredients around the restaurant. There was a sign on the wall saying that the potatoes they were serving today had come from a specific town in Idaho. Of course by now, I've forgotten the name of the town!

Conestoga Golf Club (Mesquite, NV)

It's so hard to find a good restaurant in Mesquite, but I think I've finally found the answer: the golf clubs! I hate the restaurants in the casinos because of all the cigarette smoke and the other restaurants in town seem to only be fast food types. The last time I was there I stumbled across the restaurants at the golf clubs. They tend to close early and only serve sandwiches, soups, and salads, but I think that's a small price to pay for a tasty meal.

This is the called the 1880 Burger (the restaurant is called the 1880 Grille) and it comes with tobacco onions and sharp cheddar cheese and is served on a brioche bun. You can get it in two sizes: a 1/2 pound for $8.99 or a 1/3 pound for $6.99.
